Things You'll See

Throughout most of its long history, the 2.4-km (1.5-mile) loop trail leading through Sundance Canyon was accessible by road from the town of Banff. In the mid-1980s, the road beyond the Cave and Basin was converted to a paved walking and cycling path, which made the trip longer but more scenically varied. Today, many people bike to the canyon on the paved trail (or cross country ski during the winter), but much of the approach follows beside the Bow River and is a pleasant route for walkers as well. The first 1.6 km (1 mi), the trail follows the Bow River and its side channels with views of the rugged peaks to the north, including the distinctive spire of Mount Edith.
